The Kindly Ones is the blog of Paul Newall and Michael S. Pearl. We write mainly on philosophy, history and religion but are also interested in literature, science and politics.
What does the name mean?
The Kindly Ones is a translation of the Greek Eumenides and generally refers euphemistically to the Furies of mythology, who were spirits of the underworld embodying the anger of the dead. The name is also a reference to the novel by Jonathan Littell and was chosen because we intend to explore many of the themes discussed or experienced by the character Maximilien Aue in the story. Our tag line, “the awful, inalterable solidarity of humanity”, is a quote from this work and captures our overarching interest.
Our comments policy explains our approach to feedback, which we welcome.
